What does probation for drug related crimes entail?

A friend of mine was recently caught for possession of a small amount of marijuana, and his court date is coming up. He applied for ARD and got into the program, but he will also be on probation for a year. What exactly is probation and what will it entail for him? This is in PA, in case it matters.
