it sounds like grubs are eatting your roots off you gr. to find out if it is grubs where you pull out the gr dig only deep enough to the roots you may find short worms, that is your grubs. the sand deposits may be ant hills. to find out if it is ants watch the mound for a few minutes to see if it is ants than spray for them.
