What format??

ok.. i downloaded a couple of videos from limewire using softwarecrunch.com and it said the video would be in .flv format. but after the download, the file type was an MS DOS application.. tried an .flv to .avi converter but as expected it didnt recognise the file type.. but it plays in VLC player..so could anyone tell me what file type this could be and how i could convert it into a .avi format? would really help..
